about

Hold Fast Stand Sure I Scream a Revolution is a musical instrument made up of porcelain mushroom bells, with bell shaped caps and tubular bell stalks of varying sizes, they are microtonal and have the soothing quality of Gamelan. The Mushroom Band invites people to come and agitate the bells and a scratch ensemble evolves creating a complex network of players, this particular iteration was a performance at the Hepworth Wakefield where we played with my spiritual brothers Grumbling Fur Time Machine Orchestra.

My ecological awakening to the powers of mushrooms began when I went foraging on the Isle of Mull with a friend Sion Parkinson, we hunted for Chanterelles whose golden fluted bodies cropped up in abundance and seemed to glow against the dense mystical earth of the woodland. But it was probably at the age of ten that their psychedelic imprint was made after reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in which her encounter with a hookah smoking blue caterpillar a top a toadstool left its mark. Mushrooms are a symbol of entering other worlds imbued in our consciousness as grotesque, magic and poisonous. Closer to humans than to plant life, this confusing specimen holds us in rapture and fear whilst at the same time suggesting a “radical mycology” a term coined by mycophile Peter McCoy who leads a shroom anarchist movement, whilst mycologist Paul Stamets suggests they have the power to save the planet.
